Searching for new drugs to fight staphylococcal infections: a drug repurposing strategy to identify efflux inhibitors and antibiofilm agentes

Sofia Santos Costa is a Researcher at the Medical Microbiology Unit at IHMT-NOVA and a member of the Global Health and Tropical Medicine Research Center (GHTM), Tuberculosis, HIV and Opportunistic Pathogens and diseases (THOP) group.
She has a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, specialization in Microbiology (2013, IHMT-NOVA), Master in Medical Microbiology (2008, NOVA) and a Degree in Applied Chemistry, branch of Biotechnology (2005, FCT-NOVA).
In 2014, he received the 2013 Professor Doutor Manuel Pinto Award, which rewards the best PhD Thesis of that year in the area of Biomedical Sciences, specializing in Microbiology and the 2013 Garcia de Orta Excellence Award for the best student of that year from IHMT/UNL.
Currently, he is Co-PI of the Research Project “BIOSAFE – Preventing antimicrobial resistance in the community – the safe use of biocides”, funded by FEDER/FCT, and member of ENOVAT Cost Action “European Network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment”.
To date, she has published 24 articles, as author or co-author, in international journals with scientific refereeing.
Sofia Santos Costa has participated as a teacher in several curricular units of the Master’s programs in Medical Microbiology (NOVA) and Biomedical Sciences (IHMT-NOVA), as well as the Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences (IHMT-NOVA). Currently, she is co-supervisor of a PhD student and a Master’s student, having already supervised two Master’s students and co-supervised six Master’s students and one ERASMUS student.
